A creation of Hanna-Barbera and making its debut appearance on TV screens in the mid-sixties, this super strong cartoon character was more than just an average ant in a cartoon series. It was a superhero that gained popularity as being in a syndicate with Precious Pupp and The Hillbilly Bears. The introduction of Atom Ant by Hanna-Barbera came as an almost complete shift from the familiar funny animals such as Peter Potamus and Quick Draw McGraw, to the era of superheroes like Space Ghost and of course, the likes of the Atom Ant.
In the September of 1965, Atom Ant appeared in The World of Secret Squirrel & Atom Ant and this was just an introduction of the character that later a famous and well-accepted cartoon character. The supposedly real show that brought Atom Ant into the limelight kicked off a couple of weeks after the introductory short show and it was titled The Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel Show.
The any co-starred a character that was created to respond to the James Bond craze. Each episode of the show lasted for one hour and like many of the cartoon series that were before this one, it had each of the stars having a segment that majorly focused on his theatrics and exploits. The show was split into six segments with the rest of the four segments featuring Precious Pupp, SquiddlyDiddly, Hillbilly Bears, and Winsome Witch.
Unlike many other superheroes, Atom Ant almost never made an appearance in a comic book except for the Gold Key comic book that was published in 1966 that also co-starred the Secret Squirrel. He has however made a name for himself as manufacturers of toys, clothing, and lunchboxes used the character on their products.
As a superhero, the ant had an anthill located in the countryside as his office where he operated and would usually be called upon from whenever his service was needed. He had a mainframe computer, equipment for exercise, and a couple of other assets with which he worked. His superhero power was built on his ability to fly and his amazing speed. He was also invulnerable and extremely fast with his catchphrase being “Up and at ’em, Atom Ant!”
From his anthill, he would usually receive calls from the police informing him of the need for his assistance with a number of the assignments he was sent on parodying Batman missions. The underfunding and inept of the police department meant that they heavily relied on the Atom and his powers to rescue them from different situations especially from the such villains as Ferocious Flea and Professor Von Gimmick, the mad scientist.
