The animated series were created by Ted Turner, Robert Larkin III, and Barbara Pyle. It made its first television appearance on TBS in September 1990, and continued till December 5, 1992. The sequel was titled The New Adventures of Captain Planet and was aired from September 11, 1993 to May 11, 1996.
The animated series are a kiddies program designed to educate and entertain them. The Captain Planet and the Planeteers was officially launched in September 2010 after Mother Nature Network aired some footages of it back in 2009.
The idea behind Captain Planet and the Planeteers centers on defending the planet from grave disasters and ensuring that the human folk is educated on how to prevent other disasters from happening. Gaia is the character in the series that was woken up by Hoggish Greedly after he drilled above her resting chamber. Gaia realized the extent of the damage and sends five magic rings to five youths chosen from across the globe in a bid to defend the planet. Selected from all over the world, these selected youths were under the control of Gaia. Kwame, WheelermLinka, Gi, and Ma-Ti were the selected youths. They are called the Planeteers.
Captain Planet comes into the picture when the five planeteers are unable to resolve an issue alone and thus summon Captain Planet to help out. Captain Planet possesses all the powers of the five planeteers and in essence is stronger than when they are not combined. Captain Planet’s garb is a compositon of the different elements of the planet and he is able to transform himself into various elements and powers of nature. He appears in grass-green proto-mullet, crystal blue skin, earthy brown eyes, a fire-red chest, gloves, trunks, and boots, and a sun-yellow globe insignia.
Despite his powers, Captain Planet is weakened when he comes in contact with sources of pollution. This does not underrate his formidability. He returns to the planet after completing his task and restores the powers of Planeteers as they are unable to use their rings once the captain is summoned.
Common antagonists or eco-villains as they are called include Rigger, Hoggish Greedly, Verminous Skumm, Dr. Blight, and The Rat Pack among others. Captain Pollution is counterpart to Captain Planet but as the name suggests he is pro-pollution that is weakened when he comes in contact with water, sunlight or any other pure elements.
The message behind the series is quite simple. Saving the planet is a collective work with everybody being a contributing part and unity is needed to conquer the war and achieve a safe environment.
