Jerry’s Cousin – Freddie
Growing up with cartoons with no violence included was the best part from the childhood. As today many of the cartoons have weapons and violent scenes, in my time all the violence we saw was when some cat was chasing mouse or bird. One of the cartoons that left great memories and still is the most popular cartoon is “Tom and Jerry”. Tom and Jerry as a couple where hilarious in every episode, but sometimes they had company. One of the “plus one” in the cartoon was Muscles (also known as Freddie). Freddie is a tough mouse and there’s no cat that could defeat him. He doesn’t likes fried bananas and people who eat seeds. He was Jerry’s super-strong cousin. Appearing in the episode “Jerry’s Cousin” his job was to scare Tom, so that he would stop terrorizing Jerry. His mission was completed as he throws dynamite into Tom’s face and punching him. Just to make sure that his cousin is safe, Muscles gives Jerry an outfit which is identical to his, with him telling him that all he has to do is whistle.

Many persons grew up watching cartoons that had almost no violence in them. This is very unlike what is obtainable nowadays with many of the cartoons showing on TV screens all over the world containing one form of violence or the other and even some with weapons and arms. Lovers of cartoons and virtually everyone that watches television in the good old days would know the very famous “Tom and Jerry” cartoon series and these cartoon series portrayed probably the most violent of the many cartoons during this period, with a cat chasing a mouse or even a bird. Tom was the cat and Jerry, the mouse and the pair made a very hilarious couple with the memories of how they made viewers all over the world stay glued to their screens every time the cartoon series was showing on TV.
Freddie was Jerry’s cousin that would appear every once in a while and the mouse made its short appearances worth every minute of it. Freddie was also referred to as Muscles especially in its early days. Muscles or Freddie was portrayed as a tough mouse that remained undefeated even by the fiercest of cats, with Tom not being an exception. In actual fact, he was always available to save his cousin Jerry, from the pangs of Tom.
The saving prowess and power of Freddie was portrayed in the episode Jerry’s cousin where he was primarily featured to stop Tom from tormenting Jerry and he would scare him away using any means it dimmed necessary. Freddie would punch Tom and even throw dynamite at his face in a bid to ensure that Jerry remains safe. All Freddie required from Jerry anytime he needed his help from Tom was to whistle and Tom would usually get scared anytime Jerry made a gesture like he was going to whistle. Jerry was also given an outfit that was similar to what Freddie had and in addition to this, he toughened his cousin up and made Jerry look just like him. This usually scared Tom as he took Jerry as Freddie when he stepped out of his hole looking like Freddie and whistling.
This resulted in Tom bowing to Jerry and kissing his feet. Freddie was a typical example of the kind of cousin everyone would love to have and even in recent times, the humorous and strong cartoon character makes some stunt appearances.
