The Pocahontas character in this animation and its sequel Pocahontas II, is slightly related with the actual Pocahontas figure that existed decades ago.
The Pocahontas character can be described as the first princess of American Disney as she was the daughter of a paramount chief of Native America. She also doubles as the first princess of Disney to have two love interests in John Smith and John Rolfe with the former being the more recognised partner of Pocahontas.
The name Pocahontas can be translated as “the naughty one” or “Little Mischief”. This highly spiritual young lady according to the character displayed in the film, comes from a culture of Native Americans.
This adventurous character showed kindness to everybody around her and was well above her age considering the amount of wisdom she expressed. She was also a lover of nature according to film and had powers that let her communicate with nature, spirits, animals, and even understand strange languages. The sequel of the film saw gave a grown Pocahontas character that was independent and more mature compared to the first film especially as she though he love John Smith was dead.
In the first film, Pocahontas was to marry Kocoum who happens to be a warrior of her father and as she was not pleased with the move, she set out for a better life and even as she mistakenly took the sail of a ship that was carrying Europeans to be clouds, she eventually found love in John Smith even after the relationship started on a rocky note. Kocoum got to know about the relationship and was angry and with an imminent war between the Native Americans and the settlers as a result of the relationship, Pocahontas did all she could to successfully prevent the war.
It should be noted that the Pocahontas animated film was a fiction and the story only represented the notion of a noble salvage. Pocahontas made appearances in other Disney works such as Fantasmic and the Disney House of Mouse series.
Meeko was another common character in the series besides Pocahontas and her lovers.
